When it comes to packing for an international trip, we all remember the basics — passport, comfy shoes, adapters. But after a few trips (and a few travel hiccups), I’ve picked up some not-so-obvious essentials that I always pack now. Here are five unexpected things you might want to add to your packing list before your next adventure abroad.

1. Electrolyte Packets

Why you’ll thank yourself: Between long flights, extra walking, and some cocktails, you can easily become dehydrated. Electrolyte packets like Liquid I.V. or Nuun are easy to pack and can save you from feeling sluggish, especially after a big travel day. It is better to have these on hand to avoid an unnecessary trip to the store once you are at your destination. They don’t take up much room and will certainly come in handy.

Perfect for: hot weather trips, jetlag, or nights with a little too much wine.

2. A Mini First-Aid Kit

Why you’ll need it: Be sure to include an allergy medication (such as Benadryl). You never know when you’ll run into unexpected allergies — new foods, pollens, or bug bites can surprise you. You may find yourself reacting to something your body have never met before, and you may not be near a store to grab some medication. Band aids are a must- you never know when you will get some blisters from wandering around. Jetlag can also cause headaches, and it would be a shame if you have to make an extra trip to the store before your journey starts.

Pro tip: You can find these travel kits in Walgreens or on Amazon, conveniently packed and ready to go.

3. Plastic Zip-Top Baggies

When you’ll use them: These guys have so many uses, it would be silly not to bring a few extras. To keep your phone dry on a rainy day, to stop your facewash from leaking in your suitcase, to hold some snacks for that long train ride- you get the point. They take up no space at all and the benefits are limitless.

Just a thought: Bring a few different sizes if you have them at home- you will probably use them.

4. Portable Pack of Tissues

Why you don’t want to forget these: I have (unfortunately) found myself in multiple situations where toilet paper was not an option. Don’t be like me- pack the tissues in your daily backpack.

While you’re at it: Bring some wet wipes too.

5. Personal Door Lock / Door Stop

When you might use this: Surprisingly, not all hotels have locks on their doors. Or maybe you prefer Airbnb, and you get to your stay only to notice you would like an extra piece of security. It is better to have peace of mind.

Where to get this: Of course, you can order these on Amazon. Or, check your local Walmart location for these locks.

Final Thoughts:
You can’t always prepare for unexpected moments, but these items can help get you through a few. Add these to your packing list, and future-you will be so grateful. As a bonus, they really don’t take up much packing space.
