While Prohibition may be a thing of the past, the allure of speakeasies lives on. Today, these establishments pay homage to their historical roots, channeling the spirit of rebellion and exclusivity that defined the era. Exploring new destinations always comes with an exciting quest: the hunt for a hidden speakeasy. It’s an integral part of the journey—seeking out the elusive entrance, unraveling its secrets, and immersing oneself in its unique atmosphere and drinks. Will a password be required? Is there a discreet door awaiting discovery? This delightful ritual fuels the anticipation, and today, I’m thrilled to share my personal selection of the top five speakeasies in the U.S. (in my opinion), in no particular order. Every visit to these secret bars has whisked me away to a distinct era. While I won’t give away how to enter (that is the fun of it, anyway!)- I hope you get a chance to find some of these hidden gems.

1. Violet Hour – Chicago

Hailing from the suburbs of Chicago, this particular speakeasy has become a familiar spot for me. Nestled within Wicker Park, it’s concealed behind an ever-changing canvas of graffiti. Stepping through its entrance unveils a hushed ambiance, where guests are gently encouraged to maintain a low volume and curb their cellphone usage. Bear in mind that they have a dress code, so check their website before you visit. Every libation I’ve indulged in here has been amazing, matched only by the consistently excellent service. While securing reservations is strongly advised, don’t hesitate to swing by and ask about available spots (provided you manage to locate it!).

2. Offsuit – Boston

Nestled within a quiet alley of the Leather District, a hidden treasure awaits: Offsuit. The discovery of this speakeasy was an adventurous experience, embodying the authentic Prohibition-era vibes that define a true speakeasy. Upon locating its inconspicuous entrance, you’ll step into an intimate setting brimming with flavors and charm. Their menu is divided into two categories – “Kill Me Quickly” and “Sip Me Slowly” – catering to your mood, whether you’re inclined towards a smooth sipper or a more robust libation. The cozy ambiance seamlessly marries with their superb cocktail creations, resulting in an irresistible combination that’s bound to leave a lasting impression.

3. Community Speakeasy – South Lake Tahoe

Tucked away within the confines of another establishment, a hidden gem awaits – a speakeasy boasting a 1920s ambiance and an array of exceptional cocktails.. During our week-long getaway, we found ourselves drawn to this enchanting bar repeatedly. Without a doubt, discovering this speakeasy is an essential experience when visiting Tahoe.

4. House of Cards – Nashville

If you’ve strolled through the streets of Nashville, chances are you’ve passed by this hidden gem without a second thought. This speakeasy is a true rarity in its own right. With a strict dress code in place, and reservations a strong recommendation, it’s clear that this isn’t just any cocktail bar – it’s an immersive journey. While the option to savor a cocktail at the bar is certainly there, the allure goes beyond that. Opt to dine here, and you’ll find yourself partaking in a gourmet dining experience that comes with an extra touch of enchantment – tickets to an after-dinner magic show. The experience unfolds as magicians weave their tricks before your eyes, while a photographer captures the moment with a unique frame, ensuring you have a tangible keepsake of your evening. 5. Hell or High Water – Louisville

From the entrance alone, you’d never guess the treasures concealed within these walls. This hidden gem in Louisville is an absolute delight waiting to be discovered. Booking reservations ahead of time is a must, and don’t be surprised if a few questions are posed before granting you entry. Once you step inside, a world of wonders unfolds – grand bookcases and velvet curtains welcoming you. The menu is nothing short of extensive, and they clearly put a lot of thought into the quality of their cocktails.
